TOUR:
Established in 1899, Van Briggle is one of the oldest active art potteries in the United States, founded by Artus Van Briggle of Holland Dutch descent. He came to Colorado Springs after years of training at distinguished potteries and academies in Europe and the U.S. He and his wife Anne’s Art Nouveau designs and satin matte glazes received the highest awards of the day. In 1955, the abandoned Midland Terminal Railroad roundhouse built in 1887 was purchased by the Pottery to become an auxiliary of its Memorial Building. In 1968 the Memorial Building was sold to The Colorado College and all pottery operations were consolidated into the Midland Roundhouse facility. Van Briggle Pottery is the living heritage of an extraordinary artist whose heart and hands were given only half a lifetime (he died at the age of 35 from tuberculosis), and to his wife Anne whose own dedication and fine artistry after Artus’s death carried their mutual vision to success. Together they left a timeless and permanent imprint on the tradition of American art pottery.
